Drakkars, beards, big axes, runes. Vikings are not only undeniably cool but also the true bases of a common archetype for heroes in games. From Ragnar to Eivor, viking characters are famous in all media, and it’s no surprise we love Vikings in TTRPGs. You can play a warrior or shieldmaiden with nordic inspiration in almost any setting, but Viking RPGs are the perfect fit.
Courage and Glory
When playing Viking RPGs, the setting usually leans towards blood, honor, and sacrifice. The battles are supposed to be fought with determination and are not clean and elegant, most of the time. If you are looking for this kind of dirty and harsh conditions adventure, and a chance to die in battle, TTRPGs like Ygddrasil or Skaldic Sagas are a great choice. In those you live and die as a true norseman, and your fate is decided by your strength and your steel.
Viking RPGs Are for All Kinds of Players
If you are not into the most historically accurate games or like things to go a little crazier, there’s also a lot of games for you. It could be a post-Ragnarok game like Runecairn, the game where you try to survive and fight your way through what’s left of the nine realms. Or maybe the insanity of Viking Death Squad, a game based on a heavy metal song in which you play an immortal viking mowing through legions of cybernetic horrors and demons.
Apocalypse in So Many Ways
Lots of viking legends are about Ragnarok coming, and there are various interpretations on how that can happen or be played. Your character can fight to prevent the end, choose a side in the gods’ struggle, or even be a trickster and see if you can gain the upper hand when no one else knows what to do. There are several ways to approach Ragnarok and you will surely get your shot at it when playing or DMing Viking RPGs.
Various Species, One Final Goal
Historical vikings are humans, but the mythical sagas of the norse are filled with fantasy creatures and monsters. From the feared and respected frost giants to the mythical elves and dwarves, there are lots of beings in those stories. When creating a character, it makes sense that you should have the choice of an elf or dwarf. These powerful and ancient races are as worried as the humans with Ragnarok and other epic events, and they are not letting any of that happen without intervening.
