3 Benefits of 3D Printing Miniatures for Your Next RPG Campaign

You Know Deep in Your Heart that’s the Best Choice

Imagine your friends have been 3D printing miniatures and they won’t shut up about it. They tell you it changed their campaigns, made their rooms cooler, and even made them sexier. A lot of the cool mini collecting kids and TTRPG crew are 3D printing these days. It’s hi-tech,  But, in a world with internet shopping and so many miniatures to buy, why should you print them? What difference can it make? Resin, what is it good for? Well, follow along.

#1. Customize and Tell Your Own Story as You Want It to Be Told

Buying new minis is amazing, placing the order, the wait, the unboxing, the surprise. But sometimes the mini you want is not available right now, maybe it’s sold out. Or maybe they don’t ship to your country. You can 3D print miniatures with files that came from all over the globe. And you know what? Most times those 3D printed models are so much more detailed and realistic than you bought mini. That can really enrich your world, like if you have a variant hobgoblin mini, and build lore around that. Of course that can be improvised, like painting your hobgoblins purple or something like it, but having custom printed and highly detailed minis helps make your world unique. And the more custom and unique features, the more immersive and astonishing your campaign setting can be.

#2. Over Time, 3D Printing Miniatures Can Save Your Pockets From an Evil Villain

We have all had our moments of getting really, really excited and trigger happy when shopping. Minis are beautiful, they are great decorations, and we all love them. But buying them really isn’t cheap. Good quality minis can be very expensive, and the prices add up quite quickly, which can be a problem when you only want to fill that last niche. If you are a real enthusiast, printing can be very cost-efficient in the long run. Of course, you have to know where to best get your STL  files, but that’s all part of the learning process. Do the math, in the long run it can save you a few bucks you can use to buy snacks. Or maybe new files/models to print even more minis MWAHAHAHA (evil laugh not included, please check with your local vendors).

#3. You Can Bring Your Players Closer and Put Them to Work

As a dungeon master, I know how we feel most of the time. It’s amazing to be able to build a world, weave a story with your friends and be surprised every time. It’s also a LOT of work. Preparing, creating NPCs, choosing the right creatures and minis and making sure everyone feels fine. But not everything has to be done by you, alone, my fellow storyteller. Players can 3D print their own character minis or those of the companions or creatures they are interested in. Turning the job of  acquiring/gathering miniatures in a group assignment is great, but it becomes even better when everyone is printing them. Or even painting them! It becomes a kind of treasure hunt, when everyone is so curious about where you got that model.
